ALTRINCHAM FC PLAYERS OF 1982/83

From the Dagenham FC v Altrincham programme of 21 August 1982:

Altrincham visit us today minus six of the squad that saw them through to last season’s F.A. Trophy Final; those six being John Connaughton, who has retired due to business; Stan Allen, who has retired to reserve team coach; John Owens to Marine, Barry Whitbread to Marine; Ivan Crossley, who has retired and John Rogers, who is training at present with Wigan Athletic.

The Altrincham side will be chosen from:

  • Malcolm Bailey: 32-year-old defender, signed from Runcorn in August 1979. Previously with Northwich Victoria and Port Vale.
  • Graham Bennett: Striker signed during this month from last season's Northern Premier League champions, Bangor City. Was the Northern Premier League’s leading goalscorer last season. Previously with Bridgend and Barry.
  • John Cavanah: Midfielder, signed from Preston North End in 1979.
  • David Constantine: Defender, signed during the close season after being released by Bury.
  • Paul Cuddy: Defender, signed last December from Cheshire League club Chorley. Previously with Huddersfield Town.
  • John Davison: Defender or mid-fielder; is in his second spell with the club, rejoining in 1976 from Bangor City. An England semi-pro cap, who has also played for Northwich Victoria and Burnley.
  • Phil Gardner: Defender, in his second season with the club, signing from Everton last October.
  • Graham Heathcote: 28-year-old midfielder: in his second spell with the club, rejoining from Northwich Victoria.
  • Barry Howard: 32-year-old striker; in his fifth season with the club, having joined from Stockport County in 1978. An England semi-pro cap, who has also played for Runcorn, Hyde and Oldham Athletic.
  • Lawrence Iro: Midfielder; signed from Liverpool in February 1981.
  • Dick Johnson: Goalkeeper; signed during the close season from Tranmere Rovers.
  • Jeff Johnson: Striker; signed in 1976 from Hyde United. 31-year-old England semi-pro cap, who has also played for Stockport County.
  • John King: Midfielder; signed from Northwich Victoria in 1977. Previously with Kirkby. Wigan Athletic and Shrewsbury Town.
  • Phil McGreal: Striker; signed from local club, Stork, in January 1982.
  • Andy Morris: Defender; signed during the summer from Everton.
  • Paul Round: Midfielder; signed in January 1982 from Bury. Previously with Huddersfield Town.
  • Gareth Smith: Second-string goalkeeper signed in October 1981 from Manchester United.

  • VISITING MANAGER

    Tony Sanders, took over as full-time manger of Altrincham in March 1976. Guided Skelmersdale to their Amateur Cup Final success over Daggers in 1971. Also had managerial experience at New Brighton and Icelandic First Division club Vikinghur.
