Altrincham F.C. Youth Team: Match Report.

LEIGH RMI YOUTH (0) 0 ALTRINCHAM YOUTH (2) 4

Bolton & District N.W. Youth Alliance Open Cup Match played at Pennington on Sunday, 3rd March, 2002. Kick-off 1.50pm

The following is based on information kindly provided by George Heslop.

This match was played on a very muddy pitch on which the line markings were very unclear. The previous match on the pitch had only finished at 1230pm but due to the late arrival of the officials, the game did not kick off till 1.50pm. With 25 minutes gone and the score goalless, Alty keeper Jordan Broxson was sent off for allegedly handling the ball outside his penalty area, though this was difficult to verify.

Fortunately, Alty had a substitute keeper on the bench so Neil Wolszczuk was able to come on, with Paul Glynn being the unlucky player substituted. Ten minutes later Paul Tilley put the ten men ahead following a build up that involved Lee Thompson, David Walsh and Lee Shillito (35 mins). Just before the break a Thompson shot was handled and a penalty awarded to Altrincham. The Leigh offender was sent off before Paul Robinson converted the penalty to give Alty a half-time cushion (44 mins).

The goal of the game arrived after 64 minutes when David Walsh unleashed a thirty yarder with the outside of his right foot. Assisted by the wind, David bent the shot into the top corner of the net. Lee Thompson then gave way to substitute striker, Mario Daniel. After 75 minutes a foul left Paul Tilley unable to continue and his place was taken by Domain Esdale. Five minutes from the end, a right-side corner by Lee Shillito came to Mario Daniel on the edge of the box and he drove the ball home through a crowded penalty area. Altrincham now travel to Daisy Hill, next Sunday, in the next round.
